It's a great thing that Koffi Olomide has been sentenced to one year imprisonment for assaulting a woman. Hopefully this will now become a trend.

Koffi Olomide is one of the biggest acts out from Africa with several commercially successful albums under his belt. It's a shame that an icon of African music would behave so crass in public. There should be no reason why he should lay his hands on women. The Congolese singer has unfortunately shown us that despite his talent he regularly assaults not only women but also men as well.
According to Daily Nation in Kenya, Koffi Olomide beat up one of his dancers and a photojournalist in 2013. The iconic singer has had a few controversies which indicate that he has a problem controlling his temper. Forget about the gold records and classic albums, Koffi Olomide is just a thug. It's only right that he is going to prison for his bad behaviour.
We have swept the issue of male celebrities beating up women in Africa under the rug for too long. These so called stars should be held accountable when they assault women. Celebrity or not, any man who assaults a woman should be punished. Kudos to the Congo judicial system for doing what is right. I hope Koffi Olomide would really serve time for his horrible act and he doesn't find a way to beat the system. A right message has to be passed across.
What has happened to Koffi Olomide should also serve as a lesson to us here in Nigeria. We have heard of so many male celebrities who have (allegedly) physically abused their spouses and yet nothing happens to them. There are no police investigations, there are no enquiries, things just go on fine and nobody bothers to find out if these accusations are true. These male celebrities do not even lose their endorsements over these strong allegations.
There is a bad culture of turning the other way when a male celebrity is accused of domestic violence. This has to stop. Male celebrities shouldn't have a layer of immunity for slapping, beating or kicking women.
I hope one day our judicial system will rise to the occasion and jail a male celebrity for laying his hands on a woman. The time has come for us to do the right things and protect women who are being abused in the entertainment industry.
