Faleke, Wada lose as court says polls must hold

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that the supplementary governorship elections in Kogi State must hold tomorrow, December 5, 2015.

The court reached the judgment today, December 4, after throwing out four cases brought before it on the matter, Premium Times reports.

According to presiding judge, Justice Gabriel Kolawole, the court had no jurisdiction to grant the requests made by the various parties.

Justice Kolawole also ruled that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had the authority to order and conduct the polls.

The initial election held on Saturday, November 21, but was declared inconclusive by INEC due to irregularities.

The issue was further complicated by the death of All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Prince Abubakar Audu who was in the lead along with his running mate, James Faleke.

INEC authorized the APC to replace Audu to which end the party nominated Yahaya Bello but this didn’t sit well with Faleke who insisted that he should be declared governor-elect.

Audu’s running mate subsequently sued INEC while incumbent Governor and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Idris Wada also urged the court to rule in his favour.

Faleke chose Audu’s son, Mohammed to be his running mate after refusing to run alongside Bello.
