Breaking News 16 Polish sailors kidnapped by Nigerian pirates

A cargo ship with 16 Poles on board has reportedly been hijacked by pirates off the coast of Onne, Rivers State

A cargo ship named Szafir (Sapphire) carrying 16 people of Polish origin has been hijacked by Nigerian pirates, The Polish Consulate in Abuja, Nigeria, has confirmed.

According to Poland's Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski, the cargo ship had been sailing from the Belgian port of Antwerp to Onee, Rivers State, and it belongs to Polish company Euroafrica, based in Szczecin, North Western Poland.

The Office of the Polish Prime Minister tweeted:

meaning, "Representatives of the Government shall inform the media about the situation in Nigeria, where the kidnapped Polish seamen."

BBC Africa Security Correspondent, Tomi Oladipo, tweeted:

 

According to Radio Poland, it is understood that the Nigerian navy is engaged in a rescue operation.

Radio Poland also reported that woman whose husband is apparently on board the vessel has told Poland's TVN 24 station that “more than a dozen sailors locked themselves in the engine room and turned off the engines.”

The ship is currently anchored around 30 sea miles off the Nigerian coast, Reuters reports.

The kidnappers have not made any demands as at press time.
