The US and the United Kingdom have warned against any plans to rig Nigeria’s recently concluded Presidential elections.

The elections held on Saturday, March 28 and Sunday, 29 and results are currently being collated and announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“There are disturbing indications that the collation process – where the votes are finally counted – may be subject to deliberate political interference,” UK Foreign Secretary, Philip Hammond, and US Secretary of State, John Kerry, said in a joint statement on the Nigerian elections released on Monday, March 30.

The statement continues:

“The Governments of the United States and the United Kingdom would be very concerned by any attempts to undermine the independence of the Electoral Commission (INEC), or its Chairman, Prof Jega; or in any way distort the expressed will of the Nigerian people.”

“Our governments welcome the largely peaceful vote on March,28. The Nigerian people have shown a commendable determination to register their vote and choose their leaders.”

Released results currently show All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Muhammadu Buhari in the lead against incumbent President, Goodluck Jonathan.

INEC is expected to continue collation and announcement of results from 10am today, March 30.
