Benedict Anieze, a Lagos-based father, has blamed the act of smashing the head of his newborn on an evil spirit.

Man blames evil spirit for forcefully smashing baby’s head on the floor

Anieze, who resides in the Pipeline area of Idimu, Lagos State, committed the crime on Sunday, April 3, 2022, after which he fled for the fear of jungle justice. The suspect was reported to be at home with his family when he suddenly picked his one-month old baby, and forcefully smashed her head on the floor.

After breaking the baby’s skull, Anieze, in a bid to conceal the crime he committed, set their apartment ablaze, and took to his heels thereafter.

“The mother of the baby was jittery because of what happened; she was at home with her husband when he suddenly carried the baby and smashed her on the ground.

“He even set the house on fire after what he did. He wanted to conceal the crime but the neighbours, who saw the fire, quickly intervened and put it out. The mother of the baby is just 17-year-old,” a source familiar with the incident was quoted as saying.

Neighbours, who were around at the time of the incident, encouraged the distraught mother of the victim to report the matter to the nearest police station.

Confirming the incident, Lagos Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Benjamin Hundeyin said the suspect who was at first at large had been arrested, adding that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCIID) in Yaba, for further investigation.

His words: “There was no argument between him and his wife. He said he was possessed by evil spirits when he smashed the baby on the ground. He also set the house ablaze and ran away.

“The wife cried out and after putting out the fire, they brought her to the station. The police alongside neighbours tracked him down to the place where he was arrested.”

The police spokesperson added that the corpse has been deposited at the Yaba General Hospital’s morgue.
