Man hacks wife to death over food in Niger

A 50-year-old man has been arrested by the police in Niger State for hacking his wife to death because she refused to give him food.

News Agency of Nigeria [NAN] reports that Tanko, who hails from Maigoge Village in the Mariga Local Government Area of the state, hacked his 30-year-old wife identified as Auta, to death following an altercation and to cover up the crime, he threw the cutlass he allegedly used in the killing into a nearby bush.

Tanko who was arrested after neighbours reported the matter to the police, reportedly confessed to the crime saying he got angry and killed his wife because she denied him food for five days.

“My wife was fond of not giving me food on time and when I complained, she would abuse me. She never gave me food each time I demanded it.

She even asked my 10-year-old daughter to abuse me because I was asking for food and whenever I want to correct the girl she will abuse me.

I am sorry, it was the work of the devil and I pray my in-laws would find a place in their hearts to forgive me. I regret all my actions,” Tanko said.

Confirming the incident, the acting Police Public Relations Officer [PPRO] in the state, Peter Sunday, said the suspect had already been charged to court while investigations continue into the matter.
