2 BRT buses crash in Lagos, many injured

Some passengers are reported to have been rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.

The two BRT buses crashed into each other in the Asolo area of Lagos State [LASTMA]

The accident occurred early on Monday, September 2, 2019, according to a statement by the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA).

"An accident involving two high capacity buses on the BRT corridor at Asolo. Traffic building up both ways due to onlookers. Recovery already ongoing," the traffic agency posted on Twitter.

Eyewitnesses reported that the accident was caused by a commercial motorcyclist who illegally used the BRT lane. 

This was echoed by Fola Tinubu, the managing director of Primero Transport Services Ltd., operators of BRT.

"We need to do something about these Okada menace because if we don't do something about it, this kind of thing will still happen again.

"The buses trying to evade an okada and that was when they collided with each other," he said.

It's unclear how many passengers are injured, but eyewitnesses have reported that some people were taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

The accident comes just a week after a fully-loaded cement truck crashed into a BRT bus, also in Asolo.

The accident left three people dead and 58 others injured.
