NLC calls proper implementation of Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act

Mr Ayuba Wabba, NLC President, made the call in a statement signed by him to mark the 2018 International Women’s Day Celebration.

Wabba said that the proper implementation was necessary to prohibit all forms of violence against persons in both private and public life.

He said enhanced implementation of the Act would also provide maximum protection and effective remedy for victims as well as punishment for offenders.

Waba expressed concern that violence against women and girls was the most widespread violation of human rights in the world.

“This occurs everywhere; at home, in schools, on the streets and at work, but often treated with impunity.

“We, therefore, support the ILO Convention on Gender Based Violence for the realisation and protection of women’s rights and increased productivity and dignity at work,‘’ he said.

He called on all to support the cause of the Convention.

Waba reiterated the congress’ commitment to continually advocate the adoption and implementation of policies and strategies that would promote gender equality in the workplace, unions and the larger society.

“This is indeed the right time to commemorate the political, economic and social achievement of women.
