Kendrick Lamar's 'To Pimp A Butterfly' is an extraordinary, brilliant album

'To Pimp A Butterfly' is an an extraordinary, and brilliant album from a rapper who wants so bad to be the leader of not only his generation but his race.

Kendrick Lamar never goes for the obvious. Take a look at his major record label debut '', a highly conceptual album that tells the story of him growing up in Compton amidst violence, and seeking the interest of a girl called Sherane.

No one could have guessed that is sophomore album '' would end up being what it is. What exactly is Kendrick's LP about? Kendrick battles with fame and success, until he feels trapped.

Politically charged, illuminating and deeply layered Kendrick Lamar wades through survivor's guilt, capitalism, and temptations from 'Lucy' a.k.a Lucifer.

Resisting the temptation to be another rapper who pimps his talent for the almighty dollar while neglecting his people, Lamar finds a purpose through a poem that narrates his journey to fulfillment, as well as a personal interview with his inspiration/muse 2Pac Shakur.

The production on this album is as left field as you can imagine. 'To Pimp A Butterfly' sounds like a Motown rap album produced by the great record label in its golden days. Tracks like the opener 'Wesley's Theory', 'Institutionalized' and 'These Walls' are funk laden. It's a complex mesh of soulful grooves, funk, Hip-Hop, and Hip-Hop Jazz.

On his new album, Kendrick Lamar escapes the commercialization of his beautiful soul (hence the title 'To Pimp A Butterfly'), and discovers the true purpose of using one's talent. For Kendrick it's for the upliftment and education of the black race.

'To Pimp A Butterfly' is an an extraordinary, and brilliant album from a rapper who wants so bad to be the leader of not only his generation but his race.
