Supreme Court upholds lawmaker's dismissal, fines him N1 million

The panel rejected his suit and awarded the sum of N1 million against him and in favour of his opponent.

In a ruling delivered in Abuja on Friday, June 23, 2017, the lawmaker of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was ordered to vacate the representative seat of the Vandikwa/Konshisha constituency for Dorathy Mato who was adjudged to be the winner of the party's ticket.

The former House of Representatives returned to the apex court to ask that the case be retried in a lower court, but the court struck out the application on the grounds that the law does not allow it to review its own judgment.

During the June ruling, Hembe had also been ordered to return all the salaries and benefits he has enjoyed for the period he was in office.

Despite the court order, Mato is yet to be sworn in as the new representative of the constituency with House spokesman, Abdulrazaq Namdas explaining that she could not be sworn in because she needed to complete certain documentation.
