The Sokoto state-owned Orthopaedic Hospital in Wamakko has had its operations paralysed owing to the disconnection of electricity supply.

Reports say the hospital was disconnected on May 28th by the officials of the Gwiwa Business unit of the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDC).

The disconnection came after the alleged failure of its management to pay its outstanding debts of about N1.57 million, which was said to have accumulated for about five months.

Confirming the development, the Chairman, Medical Advisory council (CMAC) of the hospital, Dr Nura Altine said the hospital was now relying on its generators which were being alternated six-hourly.

Said Altine,

"We have been paying the company about N 600,000 monthly to defray the debt, but there was a delayed payment. We are, however, making efforts to ensure that we pay the outstanding debt for the electricity supply to be restored any moment from now. The ugly development had forced us to discharge some of our less critical patients, as we cannot operate on generators for 24 hours non-stop,”

Also corroborating the development, the Manager of the Gwiwa Business Unit of the KEDC, Mr Umar Mohammed said that the hospital was disconnected due to the non payment of the N 1.57 million debt.
