Nigerian midwife in trouble in the UK over fake qualifications

A Nigerian midwife based in the United Kingdom has been placed under investigations after she allegedly falsified her professional qualifications.

The 55-year-old Momoh who is also a well known Female Genital Mutilation [FGM] campaigner, is said to have overstated her professional qualifications and could be jailed if found guilty at the end of investigations.

Momoh who recently set up the first FGM clinic in the UK and was awarded an MBE for services to women’s health care is said to have repeatedly described herself as ‘Dr. Momoh’ despite not being a qualified medical doctor.

A report by the BBC revealed that though Momoh has an honorary doctorate from Middlesex University, that still does not make her a doctor as she is being currently addressed on the website of Guys’ and St. Thomas’ NHS Trust in London where she runs the FGM clinic.

The British Nursing and Midwifery Council regulates midwives, confirmed that Momoh is under investigation but declined to reveal details.

According to the BBC programme Newsnight, Momoh has also examined children for FGM at least five times, despite not having the relevant qualifications.

Official medical guidelines in the UK state that only a doctor with specialist training should examine child abuse victims.

Mail Online reports that in 2014, a judge described Momoh as 'not a reliable witness' during a court case in Leeds in which a girl was alleged to have undergone FGM.

The Judge, Sir James Munby said she merited ‘harsh criticism’ and had ‘difficulty in providing answers to even the simplest factual question’, adding that she had done ‘a remarkably shoddy piece of work’ and ‘worse than useless’.

After examining the girl, Momoh originally said there was evidence to suggest that the child had been subjected to ‘some form of FGM’, but in oral evidence in court, she changed her findings.
