Documentary about Ghanaian dance in the works

This film explores dance, culture and language of a faction of West African people.

Rebekah A. Frimpong is working on a new culture documentary film called “Adowa”. The filmmaker of Ghanaian origin is set to explore the traditional “Adowa” dance performed during funerals by the Ashanti people.

The dance is also performed at public functions. It involves using ones hand to tell a story with different movements. Sometimes dancers hold white cloths or handkerchiefs in their hands. The “Adowa” documentary will be investigating the story of the dance; it’s origin, the music that complements it and the interpretation of the symbolic hand moves.

Production for the film began early this month and is set for completion in early 2016. The film is directed by Frimpong and produced by Joshua B. Alafia.

Frimpong is the founder of the "I Luv Africa" Film Festival in Ghana. The filmmaker who is also a poet made her film debut in 2009 with a documentary titled “Her”. The following year she released “Vanishing Seeds-Haiti”.
