‘Obey the party,’ Governors tell Senators

A meeting of the APC Senators, on Tuesday, June 23, 2015, resulted in physical combat after the legislators disagreed on how the remaining Assembly leaders would be chosen.

Governor-members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have urged the party’s legislator-members to abide by the wishes of the party regarding the filling of the remaining principal positions in the Senate and House of Representatives.

A meeting of the APC Senators, on Tuesday, June 23, 2015, resulted in physical combat after the legislators disagreed on how the leaders would be chosen.

The APC governors made the call after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari which lasted from Tuesday till the early hours of Wednesday, June 24.

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole said:

“Basically what we are saying is that the senators should adopt the position of the party. We were all elected on the platform of the party. We are not just a collection of individuals. We are a political party and when the party has spoken we must listen.”

“Otherwise if it was a game of individuals like golf then individuals can go their ways. I think it is very clear at this point that the party has the responsibility to keep the system going.”

“So we as progressive governors we have listened to the president and we have discussed extensively and we are clear that the party’s position should be supported by the senators. This is the way it should be and we should start on a note of working closely.”

Meanwhile, APC Chairman, John Oyegun has written to Senate President, Bukola Saraki and House of Representatives Speaker, Yakubu Dogara telling them who should fill the remaining leadership positions in the National Assembly.

Saraki and Dogara sparked off a crisis in the party when they contested the Assembly leadership positions and emerged victorious despite being expressly excluded after the conduct of a mock election.
