Unrest in Igangan as 'herdsmen' kill over 20 in fresh attack

The gunmen who struck at midnight killed and set many houses ablaze including the palace of the monarch in the agrarian town.

According to Taiwo Adeagbo, the Spokesperson of the Igangan people, the culprits were Fulani herders.

Confirming the incident to Vanguard on the telephone, Adeagbo said he didn’t know how many people were killed because he was still counting bodies when the newspaper called him.

“Yes, it is true. Fulani herders came in the night to attack our people. They killed many people. I’m there now counting the number of dead people. I don’t know how many for now because we are still counting,” he said.

A Yoruba Nation agitator, Tunji Omolewu also confirmed the incident, saying he had counted over 20 bodies.

Omolewu said, “I got the call around 11 pm. We were on our way from Ekiti where we had gone to do the Yoruba nation rally. I got to Ibadan around 12 am and when the calls did not stop coming, I decided to come home. I have counted more than 20 dead bodies. The palace of our monarch was torched. Adolak filling station too was burnt”.

Oyo State Governor, Mr Seyi Makinde has also confirmed the attack saying he is already being briefed about the incident.

The governor, however, urged residents of the state to remain calm saying security operatives are now in control of the situation.

The attack on Igangan happened six days after the Chairman of Amotekun Corps in Oyo State, General Kunle Togun (retd) raised the alarm that some foreign herders were about to unleash terror in the Southwest region of the country.
