According to reports, a devastating mudslide occurred on August 14, 2017, after three days of heavy rainfall in Freetown, leaving thousands dead, and displacing many others.
Elenoroh Jokomie Metzger, the women leader of Regent, an area on the outskirts of Freetown, said "Over 1,000 perished in the mudslide and flood disaster, and we will never know the exact number now," Aljazeera reports.
Speaking on the operation, the NAF spokesman, Air Commodore Olatokunbo Adesanya told newsmen that the relief materials were donated by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Adesanya also said “The NAF has completed the airlift of 38,000kg of relief materials to Freetown, Sierra Leone, following the recent mudslide and flood, which led to the loss of several lives and properties.
“The relief materials were donated by the Federal Government of Nigeria towards alleviating the suffering of the people affected by mudslide and flood in Sierra Leone. The airlift, which was conducted in five sorties with NAF C-130 Hercules aircraft, is in partial fulfilment of the statutory responsibility of the NAF.”
President Muhammadu Buhari has since sent a message to the President of Sierra Leone, Ernest Bai Koroma sympathising with him over the mudslide that killed many people in the country.
