Over 14 killed as inmates, prison officers clash in Ebonyi

Over 14 persons, including one prison officers, were said to have killed been in the incident, while several others sustained injuries.

 

Report said the prisoners had in the early hours of Thursday, rebelled their poor treatment, especially lack of feeding which had become a norm in the prison.

This was said to have escalated when the inmates reach out for deadly objects they could find and attacked prison officers

Consequently, the officers opened fire on the inmates in self-defense, killing many of them, the report said.

It was gathered that it took a combined team of Prison officers, Nigeria police and the Army to stop the violent inmates, who had already subdued the prison guards and were escaping.

The rioting inmates attempted to escape through an opening they had created on the prison wall before anti-riot policemen heavily tear gassed them into submission, it was learnt.

The casualties in the incident have been taken to the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki, FETHA.
