Police launches campaign against cultism

Mohammed, represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr Oyekunle Adeboye, said that all had to be partakers in the fight.

The police have launched a campaign against cultism in Enugu State, calling on the youth to shun the vices.

Performing the ceremony at the Amaeke Ngwo Civic Centre, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Abubakar Mohammed, said that the programme was to educate the people to shun cultism and other social vices, especially the youth.

Mohammed, represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr Oyekunle Adeboye, said that all had to be partakers in the fight.

“The cultists are your sons and daughters while they are our brothers and sisters so we cannot fight it alone without your assistance,” he said.

The police spokesperson, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, who delivered a lecture on: The Road Map to Becoming a Champion, said that everybody could not become champions but that it was everybody’s wish to be one.

“If you want to be a champion, you must be in the grace of champion and the answer to becoming champions is to shun cultism. Cultism is like an envelope that contains lots of things that can stop you from reaching your destination in life. Crimes like stealing, drug addiction, rape, car snatching and others are associated with cultism and any offence among this can lead you to untimely death,” he said.

In another lecture by Dr Ifeanyi Ojobor of the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu, he said that the law allowed freedom of association but that such freedom when abused became disobedience to the law and punishable.

“You have the right for association but the right has a clause to it and the clause frowns at the present cult activities associated with killings, rape, confrontations, burglary and others,” he said.

The programme was organised by the public relations department of the police in partnership with the police-community relations committee.
