The death toll from the current Ebola outbreak has now passed the 7,500 mark, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The WHO also added that it had recorded almost 20,000 cases of the disease since the beginning of the outbreak.

The new figures were revealed on Friday, December 19, and are based on the situation in the three worst affected countries, Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

The rate of Ebola transmissions has decreased in the first two countries but Sierra Leone is still witnessing a rapid spread of the disease.

The Sierra Leonean government has announced a ban on all Christmas celebrations to enable it curb the spread of Ebola.
