Chocolate City, Jesse Jagz both need each other

Choc City is the only label in the country that knows how to promote and market rap music.

Jesse Jagz

Last week a song titled 'Summer Time' by M.I, Ice Prince, Jesse Jagz and Loose Kaynon 'leaked' on the Internet (yeah, a leaked song that came with an artwork) and got the kids on Twitter in a frenzy. Apart from being a good rap song, the track most importantly featured the original core of the then high flying rap collective 'Choc Boyz'.

Also before the leak, Audu Maikori the boss of the Choc City imprint had hinted that the first incarnation of the rap clique might be on the horizon.

Groups and cliques reuniting have been known to raise false hope over and over again (where Fugees at?), but I am just going to go out on record and say that Chocolate City label needs the artistic brilliance of Jesse Jagz back in its fold.

Hands down Jesse Jagz is the most multi talented act we have in Nigeria. His two last albums , and are arguably the best albums we've heard in Nigeria within the last two years. Jesse Jagz is a gift to this generation, an unadulterated musical genius.

With the blessing comes the curse. Jesse Jagz is an artiste's artiste any day. He can create a classic LP easily, but in this day and age you can create the best album since Michael Jackson moon walked his skinny frame to the greatness, and nothing will happen if you don't push.

This is where Chocolate City comes on. Choc City is the only label in the country that knows how to promote and market rap music. Two of the hottest rappers in Nigeria M.I and Ice Prince are on its roster. While most management and labels can't figure out how to sell rap music, and while the lucky ones fluke it with one hot rapper, Chocolate City have the formula locked down. Even their other rap acts who haven't popped off are at least in your faces.

Chocolate City needs to get back Jesse Jagz so as to ensure that his brilliant works don't get lost in time. Jesse Jagz has crazy albums but they do not direct or dictate the narrative of rap music in Nigeria. They feel like an isolated case of brilliance, rather than the leading light of the genre.

With Chocolate City pushing and promoting him, Jesse Jagz can easily be regarded as the best and hottest Nigerian rapper out. They have the muscle and the resources to get to outshine the big boys running the game now.

On the flipside, the Audu Maikori led imprint have been missing that creative dynamite since Jargo jumped ship. Yeah, M.I has found his creative spark with his new album . With Ice Prince holding it down for the pop culture, and M.I straddling the middle for both pop lovers and Hip-Hop heads, they need to find a balance on the left with a creative mad genius. Who else fits that role better than the man Jesse Jagz.

With Jesse back, Choc City will have the best selling and most talented rappers once again. Also a Jesse Jagz produced Ice Prince album will do wonders for the 'Aboki' rapper's career.

Yes mistakes were made initially with the handling of Jesse Jagz's career and music. I have the strong belief don't parties have learnt a lot during the split and see things better now.

As Chocolate City seeks to consolidate its monopoly on rap music in Nigeria, they need the services of the talented wizard known as Jesse Jagz, and he needs them too so that his creativity won't be lost.
