Awaiting trial prisoner jumps to his death at Lagos court

A young man who has spent the last six months in prison while awaiting trial over a debt of 40K has jumped to his death in Lagos.

According to a Twitter user with the handle Oluwanifemi Esq.‏ @O_Nife who witness the scene, the young man jumped from the third floor of the Ogba Magistrates Court when the judge could not decide on the case and fixed another date for his appearance.

@O_Nife who tweeted the story together with the graphic photos of the late man, said he was arrested six months ago after his creditor reported him at a police station and when he could not pay back the money, he was charged to court and remanded in prison.

On the day he thought he would be freed, the judged ordered that he should be taken back to prison but apparently not willing to go back, he took the jump while he was being taken to the blackmaria that was to transport him and others back to prison.

Read how Oluwanifemi Esq.‏ @O_Nife captured the incident:

"This man jumped from the 3rd floor of the Lagos State Magistrate Court in Ogba. Been in prison on remand for the past 6 months. After his case today, he took the leap to his death.

The law should have a human face. This is very sad."
