The Federal Government has suspended the Head of Prisons in Niger State following a jailbreak which resulted in the escape of 270 inmates from the facility on Saturday, December 6.

The suspension of the Controller of Niger State Prisons, Musa Maiyaki was approved on Tuesday, December 9, by the Minister of interior, Abba Moro.

The Officer-in-Charge of the Medium Security Prison in Minna, Mohammed Bena and all the officers on duty at the time of the jailbreak have also been suspended.
This was disclosed in a statement released by the spokesperson for the Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS), Ope Fatinukun who also said that Maiyaki’s suspension was approved on the recommendations of the Controller- General of the NPS, Peter Ekpendu.
Ekpendu also ordered the redeployment of 55 officers to the prison in Minna with instructions for security to be strengthened in the state’s detention facilities.
