The Catholic Cathedral which serves as the centre of worship and the seat of the Catholic church in the Owerri locality was partly razed by a fire that is suspected to have started from an electrical fault.
The fire incident which according to eyewitnesses started from around 11:48 pm on Sunday emanated from a room where a lot of the Cathedral’s wire connection is done and damaged some parts of the building alongside electrical equipment in the building.
A Catholic Priest that was present who preferred to remain anonymous said, “The fire was not that much. It was as a result an electrical fault. It started from a room in the church where most of the wire connection was done. Yes, it damaged so many things. You know there is no way a fire will not damage something.”
Rev Fr. Raymond Nzereogu, the church’s Director of Communications who also commented on the incident praised the Fire Service for their timely response in quenching the fire as the situation could have been worse if they had not been available to help.
