Agency records N1.2bn worth of seizures at half year

According to the report, a breakdown showed that 22,763 bags rice were intercepted; valued at N113.8 million with a payable duty of N34.1 million

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit, Zone ‘A’ Ikeja, has recorded seizures and interventions valued at N1.2 billion between January and June 2016, up from N758.2 million recorded in the same period of 2015.

This is contained in a statement by the public relations officer of the unit, Mr Uche Ejesieme, on Friday in Lagos

In its anti-smuggling report, the unit indicated that 494 different seizures of prohibited goods were impounded by the unit during the period under review.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that seizures recorded in the period under review were valued at N702 million with a payable duty of N186.2million with a total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N888.3 million.

NAN reports that the unit also recorded N312.8 million worth of various interventions.

The report explained that the unit, during the corresponding period of 2015, recorded 1,030 different seizures with a DPV of N758.2 million.

According to the report, whereas the number of seizures for 2015 appeared higher, the quality of seizures between January and June, 2016, obviously accounted for the improved Duty Paid Value.

It added that 29,684 cartons of poultry products were intercepted, valued at N133.5 million with a payable duty of N26.7

The reports further showed that 50 vehicles were intercepted comprising 38 units of assorted vehicles and 12 cut buses valued at N68 million with a payable duty of N23.8 million..

The report noted that 3,174 Jerry cans of vegetable oil, 286 cartons of 10 litres as well as 1,250 empty jerry cans were also intercepted, valued at N21.1 million with a payable duty of N7.3million.

According to the report, assorted general merchandise including new and used textile materials, new and used shoes, vegetable oil, insecticide, wine, various types of spaghetti and noodles, soaps and detergents valued at N365.3 million with a payable duty of N94.1million were seized.
