In a statement released by Multichoice, sources at the CPC revealed that a hitch developed during a scheduled meeting between the company and CPC officials at the commission’s head office in Abuja on Tuesday, October 16, 2015.

Agents of the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) raided the MultiChoice Nigeria head office on Thursday afternoon, October 15, 2015.

The officials went to the main office the premier pay-TV service provider with a warrant escorted by policemen and journalists.

Laptops, and confidential documents about the company’s operations were seized during the sweep by the CPC.

MultiChoice is currently under being investigated by the CPC for its consumer satisfaction initiatives.

The reason for yesterday’s raid is yet unclear but there are reports that the actions of the incident are detached from the on-going investigation.

They said the drawback was cause by the CPC, who made demands for the personal information of Multichoice subscribers as well as the company’s contract in Nigeria.

Mr John Ugbe, Managing Director of MultiChoice who represented the company at the meeting was said to have called attention to the fact that the company owes its subscribers a duty to protect their personal information.

In the statement, Multichoice share that the sources said the company explained that releasing such private and sensitive data about their customers would be a breach of trust and a breach of agreement they had promised their customers at the initial sign up for their services.

MultiChoice representatives were quoted to have communicated their readiness to cooperate with the CPC in its attempt to see that subscribers obtain improved customer satisfaction, according to the report from the meeting. They however refused to violate the confidentiality of its subscribers.
