Agency sensitises communities against waste, open defecation

Yusuf said the exercise was part of a comprehensive campaign to create awareness of the dangers of indiscriminate dumping of waste.

Alhaji Nuhu Yusuf, the Director, Environmental Health in the agency, made this disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Hadejia.

Yusuf said the exercise was part of a comprehensive campaign to create awareness of the dangers associated with indiscriminate dumping of waste and open defecation.

According to him, the exercise is also to encourage good sanitation habits in the society.

He said the agency had collaborated with community and development organisations to educate the people on the need to keep a clean environment and encourage proper waste management at the grassroots.

“We are sponsoring radio jingles to ensure that waste and open defecation are controlled."

“Whenever the people evacuate their waste, let them dump it at designated sites, avoid dumping it into waterways,” he said.

Yusuf added that the agency also deployed sanitary inspection workers to the 27 Local Government Areas of the state to enhance its operations.

He disclosed that the agency was conducting drains and waste clearing exercise in major towns across the state to keep a clean environment and promote good sanitation habits.

The director reiterated the State Government’s commitment to protecting the environment through effective waste management.
