Expert says Nigerian delicacy, Pomo (pictured) is bad for the health

Dr. Adedapo Osinowo also listed “ifun”, “abodi”, roundabout, and other forms of meat known as “orisi-risi” (assorted) as parts which could predispose consumers to cancer.

Dr. Osinowo, the Chief Medical Personnel at the Niola Cancer Care Foundation, made the comments during the foundation’s official launch.

“All fatty meals should be eaten in moderation but if you eat these assorted meats every day, I am sad for you. You can eat them but not every day,” Osinowo said according to Vanguard.

“Abodi is the rectum and shaki is the stomach. Ponmo is a risk factor for cancer too. These parts are risk factors for cancer because of the way they are prepared, they tend to produce harmful substances that can cause cancer. Their preparation is responsible for this,” he added.

Osinowo added that consumption of fruits and vegetables would reduce the risk of cancer.

In November 2015, the Ogun State Government warned residents of the state to be on the lookout for poisonous “ponmo.”

The government, speaking through the Commissioner for Agriculture, Ronke Sokefun, gave the warning in Abeokuta during a meeting with stakeholders and ponmo sellers.

Sokefun noted that some persons in the state had decided to take advantage of the high demand for the product to sell an industrial variety which had been contaminated with tanning chemicals.
