Teaching Hospital trains nursing mothers on preparation of nutritious food using local ingredients

"We realized that the number of malnourished cases is getting higher, as such the hospital decided to train mothers on how to prepare nutritious food using local ingredients,to feed their children.

The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBU-TH), Bauchi, has commenced training programme for nursing mothers on how to improve the diet of their children, using local and cheaper food items.

Dr Yusuf Jibrin, Ag.Chief Medical Director of the hospital gave this indication in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi on Friday.

He said that beneficiaries of the programme were women whose children were on admission in the hospital as a result of malnutrition.

He said the training would enable them carter for the children with little financial implication,adding that the exercise would be done practically in the hospital's kitchen.

Jibrin said that the food items were supplied by the hospital management, adding that after the training, parents would be provided with ingredients that would last them for some time.

"We do feed them for the time they are in the hospital and before you know it, the children become healthier and gain weight.

"After the training, we will provide them with the raw materials to use at home,’’ he said.

The CMD then called on parents to make judicious use of local food items that contained nutrient that babies required to prevent malnutrition.
