Minister orders probe of Maritime Academy over fraud allegations

The investigation will be conducted with regards to N18 billion in payments made to the institution by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in the last five years.

Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi has reportedly ordered a probe into the financial affairs of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN) in Akwa Ibom State.

The investigation will be conducted with regards to N18 billion in payments made to the institution by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in the last five years, Leadership reports.

Amaechi is said to have ordered the probe after allegations of financial recklessness and large scale fraud were levelled against MAN’s rector, Joshua Okpo.

Okpo was said to have accused NIMASA of starving the academy of funds, a claim which the agency denied.
