The investigation will be conducted with regards to N18 billion in payments made to the institution by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in the last five years, Leadership reports.
Amaechi is said to have ordered the probe after allegations of financial recklessness and large scale fraud were levelled against MAN’s rector, Joshua Okpo.
Okpo was said to have accused NIMASA of starving the academy of funds, a claim which the agency denied.
The acting Director-General of NIMASA, Haruna Jauro reportedly also told Amaechi that the agency has paid over N18 billion to the academy since 2009.
The minister was said to have ordered a probe to ensure that Okpo explains what the money was spent on.
