Hunger Games: Catching Fire Beats Iron Man 3 as Highest Grossing Movie for 2013

The second series becomes 2nd female-led film since 1968 to top the year’s earner

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has defeated Iron Man 3 to become the most successful release in 2013 at the US and Canadian box office. The film has grossed almost $414 million ever since its release as against Robert Downey Jr’s $410 million Marvel superhero sequel – according to Box Office Mojo.

The second series of The Hunger Games has reportedly continued to pull in the punters and is now the most profitable film to be released in North America in 2013. This makes Jennifer Lawrence a major box office draw since 1968 when Funny Girl – a female-led film - topped the charts as the year’s top earner.

However, Iron Man 3 remains 2013’s biggest earner at the end of the year and the biggest draw worldwide, making up to $1.2 billion – according to BBC News.

The first series of Hunger Games (2012) grossed up to $408 million. But the final part of the story, Mockingjay has reportedly been split into two films that will be released in 2014 and 2015 respectively.
