Singer donates $250K to Black Lives Matter movement

This comes after the 26-year-old multiple Grammy award winner took to Twitter last month to show his support behind the Black Lives Matter movement.

He made this announcement Wednesday, August 10, 2016 days after donating $38,000 to the University of Toronto to establish an Ethiopian studies program.

"Enough is enough. it's time to stand up for this. we can either sit and watch, or do something about it. the time is now," he tweeted on July 7, 2016 to his more than 3 million followers.

The tweet came following fatal officer-involved shootings of black men in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and suburban Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Black Lives Matter, which advocates for justice and freedom for African-Americans, was founded in 2013 by Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi. The organization has garnered attention after rebuking police treatment of minorities.

The Weeknd's hits include 'Can't Feel My Face',  'The Hills' and 'Earned It' which was nominated for an Academy Award.
