Strong opposition necessary for good governance – APC leader

Oyegun also said that democracy is “not just about periodic conduct of elections but a commitment to a cause of giving a choice to the people in a free and fair manner.”

APC Chairman, John Oyegun

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), John Odigie-Oyegun has said that every government needs a strong opposition to keep it in check and hence ensure good governance.

The APC Chairman made the comments on Wednesday, June 3, 2015, while receiving former Nigerien President, Mamman Usman in Abuja.

Oyegun also said that the former ruling party had frustrated several efforts by the Nigerian opposition to form coalitions and alliances.

The APC was eventually formed from a merger of Nigeria's three biggest opposition parties – the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) – and a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
