Why is Governor flirting with APC ?

Fayose says he isn't sure he'll be a member of the PDP in 2018. Is he up to some game?

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose and Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola

He has also been fluttering his eyelashes and showing the governing party plenty of skirt.

Should we be worried?

In a recent interview, Fayose said he isn't sure he'll still be a card carrying member of the PDP before 2019.

"I don’t know the platform I will use for the 2018 election yet... and at the appropriate time, I will tell you,” he said.

Fayose also bemoaned the fact that he's the only Governor from Nigeria's South West region in the opposition PDP. A suggestion that he's become increasingly lonely.

The PDP recently lost Ondo to the APC.

“You all saw how people sold their votes in Ondo state, I am confident that that will not happen in Ekiti. I am close to the people. You are the source of my strength . Even if it requires just 48 hours to any election, if I tell you where to go, you will surely follow me there,”  the Governor said.

When a Governor says he doesn't know what political platform he'll piggyback on for the 2018 election; with the likelihood that there'll only be two formidable political parties in Nigeria heading into 2018, his comments are bound to leave plenty of room for speculation.

The APC noticed the Fayose advances and was flattered.

Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong who spoke on the sidelines of the North Central Zonal Congress of the APC in Abuja, warned Fayose not to come anywhere near the APC.

“The one I am waiting for is Ekiti. I understand that after Ondo, the man (Fayose) has been saying he wants to come to APC. He should remain in the PDP till after the elections.....Before now, some people were looking down on APC, but now people with ambition for 2019 are withdrawing from the PDP and coming to the APC.

"We are going toand we will win the elections there. After there, we are moving to Anambra and that one is a done deal.”

With the speculation around a possible Fayose defection to the APC assuming a life of its own, the man at the center of it all, had to offer a clarification.

“What I said is that if the current man-made crisis rocking the PDP persists till 2018, rather than allow them to mess us up like they did in Ondo, we may have to seek an alternative and credible platform. We are not people who betray the confidence of their people. We shall carry our leaders and the people along", the Governor said, leaving even more room for speculation about where his political future lies.

If the current crisis in the PDP persists....

But then, he added this:

“I will never dump PDP for APC. I remain strong and unshaken for the PDP. I can’t jump the boat , even if I want to jump, I won’t jump into the red sea. Why should I leave the PDP and join a party of hunger like APC? Ekiti is different from Ondo. By the grace of God, there will be a repeat of history here in 2018, I shall repeat the 16-0  that I gave  them in 2014.

”I operate like the biblical Elisha because those with us are greater than theirs. The God of Israel that conquered Philistines shall be on our side. The fact that they rigged PDP out of Ondo state does not mean they won the hearts of the people. Sooner than later, the joy they procured by dubious means will turn into ashes in their mouths. Their so-called victory is nothing but pyrrhic,”  Fayose said.

We certainly won't be speculating if Fayose hadn't implied he is looking at jumping ship.

Is Fayose seriously considering a defection to the political camp he's spent all of his years in office insulting?

He had once swapped the PDP for the AC--one of the legacy parties which collapsed into the APC. Is he on his way down that route again?

These are still early days but Fayose looks to be up to some game.

However, those calls went unanswered.
