INEC Chairman not going on terminal leave – Spokesman

Recent rumours had it that Jega would be forced to go on terminal leave in compliance with the civil service procedure rules and also that a new chairman had been nominated.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has refuted reports that its Chairman, Attahiru Jega is set to proceed on terminal leave in March.

Recent rumours had it that Jega would be forced to go on terminal leave in compliance with the civil service procedure rules and also that a new chairman had been nominated.

The reports have however been denied by Jega’s Chief Press Secretary, Kayode Idowu.

“Jega is busy preparing for the elections and you are asking about terminal leave. Does anyone planning to conduct elections go on terminal leave? There is nothing like that,” Idowu said during an interview on Tuesday, February 11.

He also stated that the civil service rules don’t apply to Jega and as such he would complete his tenure which will end on June 30.

Idowu also denied the reports that Jega had resigned his appointmentdue to pressure from the powers that be.

“No, that’s not true, he has not resigned. He didn’t resign. It is a mere rumour.”

The controversy surrounding the Jega’s status as INEC Chairman arose after he announced the postponement of the polls which were originally slated to hold on February 14 and 28 but will now hold on March 28 and April 11.
