7 'Nigerians' elected into Britain's parliament

A total of seven Britons of Nigerian descent won seats to represent their constituencies in the British parliament.

Kemi Badenoch has been elected by British voters to represent Saffron Walden

A total of seven Britons of Nigerian descent won seats to represent their constituencies in the British parliament in the election held on Thursday, June 8, 2017.

The successful British-Nigerians are: Chinyelu Susan Onwurah (Newcastle Central), Chuka Umunna (Streatham), Bim Afolami (Hitchin and Harpenden), Fiona Onasanya (Peterborough), Kate Osamor (Edmonton), Kemi Badenoch (Saffron Walden), Helen Grant (Maidstone & The Weald).

While thanking voters, 52-year-old Onwurah, born in Newcastle, said, "I want to thank everyone who voted for me for the trust and confidence they have placed in me. It is an incredible honour and privilege."

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, senior special assistant to Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari, congratulated the candidates, saying, "On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, I hereby congratulate the seven British-Nigerian candidates, who won their elections as members of the UK parliament in the elections held on Thursday, June 8, 2017.

"The unique feat is further evidence that Nigerians, anywhere in the world, will continue to excel and make the country proud.

"We wish them the very best and believe they will continuously serve their constituents with dignity and diligence."

The newly-elected parliament makes history as the one with most women majority in Britain's lawmakers chamber.
