Senate President reacts to N8.64bn wardrobe allowance reports

Saraki revealed, via Twitter on Wednesday, June 17, 2015, that the actual wardrobe allowance received by each Senator is N506,600.

Senate President, Bukola Saraki has issued a response to reports that Nigerian lawmakers are set to receive a sum of N8.46bn as wardrobe allowance.

He tweeted:

“Chairman of Revenue Mobilisation Allocation & fiscal Commission was in my office to clarify wardrobe allowance. Amount is N506,600 per Sen.”

“Fixing of remuneration of political office holders is sole responsibility of Revenue Mobilisation Allocation & Fiscal Commission #OpenNass.”

“With the current challenges we are facing as a nation, RMFAC will be reviewing allowances to reflect the current economic trend. #Opennass”

“I have just being informed that RMFAC will be publishing details of allowances on their website #OpenNass.”

The Senate President also explained that the stated sum is received annually by each Senator.

News of the proposed allowance attracted outrage from Nigerians who accused the legislators of exploiting citizens to enrich themselves.
