Fulani herdsmen 'destroy' ex-SGF's maize farm 11 days after kidnapping him

A family source had earlier accused the Nigerian police of lying about their purported rescue of Falae from his abductors.

Some Fulani herdsmen have reportedly invaded and destroyed a maize farm belonging former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Chief Olu Falae, about 11 days after he was kidnapped by armed herdsmen.

According to a Vanguard report quoting the manager of the farm, Bruno ‎Akhigbodemen, the invasion occurred at about 2am on Monday.

Akhigbodemen said the cows said over one kilometer plantation of maize, worth over N500,000, at the farm which is located at Ilado in Akure North Council area of Ondo State.

The manager explained that efforts by the farm guards to resist the destruction was rebuffed by the herdsmen who grazed their cows on the plants.

Detectives from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) ‎were deployed to the farm after Falae reported the incident to the state Police Command.

The operatives reportedly scoured the neighboring communities for the suspects but made no arrest.

Akhigbodemen called for urgent action to curb the excesses of the herdsmen.

The latest attack comes barely a week after another group of gun wielding Fulani herdsmen kidnapped the former Minister for Finance, demanding a ransom of N100 million which they later reduced to N90 million.

He was released 72 hours later amidst speculations that a ransom was paid.

Reports say two herdsmen were arrested prior to Falae's kidnap after their cattle destroyed farm products worth over N500,000.

Pulse gathered that the Police authorities have invited the Fulani community leaders who stood as sureties for them.

Monday's incidence is reportedly the fifth attack on his farm within two months.
