It asked for major repair of federal roads across the country in the interest of the citizenry, before the planned re-introduction of toll gates on highways in the country by the federal government.

The Lagos Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on the Federal Government to repair roads across the country before reintroducing toll gates.

The union made the call in a communiqué issued on Wednesday from its 2015 end-of-year congress.

The communiqué, which was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), was signed by the chairman of the council, Mr Deji Elumoye.

It also commended the Lagos State Government for acquiring new security equipment, including helicopters and patrol vehicles, meant to improve security in the state.

The union called on security operatives, especially the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the state government, to properly use the facilities for safety of lives and property during the yuletide and beyond.

On electricity, the congress urged the federal government to step up the stability of power, especially in major cosmopolitan cities like Lagos, Kano, Port Harcourt and Enugu.

The union also advised the management of The Champion Newspapers to pay the over 30 months salary arrears owed its workers.

The council warned that non-compliance may force the NUJ to disrupt the Annual Insurance Lecture of the organisation scheduled for Lagos later in December.

It also called on other media houses owing workers to pay up.

The congress also condemned the Anti-Social Media Bill which has passed second reading at the Senate, describing it as "another deliberate attempt to gag the media’’.
