All 16 construction workers trapped in collapsed mall rescued

According to the government, It is likely that non-construction workers are still trapped under the wreckage.

The mall, located at Itoku market, Abeokuta, and owned by the state government, collapsed in the early hours of Friday, May 13, trapping several workers who were on the site.

The State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun was said to have arrived the site shortly after the incident, and joined other officials in coordinating rescue efforts.

A witness said six people, who were earlier removed from the rubbles were rushed to the hospital.

However, contrary to media reports that one person was killed in the incident, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Dayo Adeneye, said no one has been confirmed dead yet.

He said five workers sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at State Hospital, ijaiye, Abeokuta, while eight were rescued unhurt.

“At the moment, records from the site engineers indicate that there were 16 workers on site at the time of the unfortunate incident and they have all been “Eight of them were rescued un-hurt, five who sustained different degrees of injuries are presently receiving treatment at the state hospital Ijaiye, Abeokuta, one is critically injured, while two have been discharged,” Adeneye said.

He added that efforts are ongoing to clear the rubbles at the site.
