The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has rescued a two-year-old baby and 11 other persons suspected to be victims of human trafficking in Katsina State. The Comptroller of the state Command, Alhaji Mohammed Alfa, disclosed this to reporters on Tuesday in Katsina.

Alfa said that the victims were arrested near Kongolam border on their way to Libya enroute Agadez, Niger Republic, following a tip - off. According to him, the immigration officers on patrol in the area stopped the vehicle carrying the victims, while the driver fled and abandoned his passengers.

Alfa said that the victims "possessed neither any travel documents nor means of livelihood". The comptroller said that the baby was with his mother, Joy Obi, 35 and sister Meyey Obi, 9. He said that NIS investigation showed that the victims were on their way to Libya in search of greener pasture.

"The suspects were misled by their traffickers whose business is to ferry persons across the border through illegal routes for their selfish gains. The traffickers operates from Kano and the border areas between Nigeria and Niger, we are prepared to burst the syndicate,’’ Alfa said. He said that the victims would be handed over to the relevant authorities for necessary action.
