UNHCR calls for improved collaboration with Borno state govt

UNHCR representative to Nigeria, Angele Dikongue-Atangana made the call when she visited the Borno state governor, Kashim Shettima.

Angele Dikongue-Atangana, the UNHCR representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS made the call when she visited the Borno state governor, Kashim Shettima recently.

She noted that the UNHCR is currently scaling up assistance in non-food items (NFIs), shelter, camp management, and livelihood activities.

Dikongue added that the UN humanitarian agency had rehabilitated the Bama motor park, which would serve as a livelihood centre.

The agency has partnered with the National Women Development Centre to train 1,000 IDPs in eight skills acquisition areas such as iron works, knitting, and weaving.

Governor Shetima who commended the UNHCR for its interventions in the state however called for more assistance to Borno state.

He stated that 90 percent of the IDPs in the northeast are from Borno state saying they are waiting for the reconstruction to return home.
