The city of Jos has been hit by a cholera outbreak even as a severe water scarcity has plagued the town for more than four weeks now.

Reports say over 20 people have been diagnosed with cholera and are currently receiving treatment, as confirmed by Dr. Yohanna IIzang, head of the Medical team at the Kauna Clinic in Tudun Wada area of Jos.

According to IIzang, there are increased cases of stooling and vomiting among residents of the state.

Punch reports that the water scarcity is coming on the heels of an industrial action embarked upon by civil servants in the state over non-payment of their six months salaries.

The scarcity has reportedly made many water vendors to resort to sourcing for water from all manner of channels.

Speaking on the water scarcity, the Public Relations Officer of the state Water Board, Nangor Ndam, said the board was putting extra effort to check the excesses of water vendors.

Ndam alleged that the vendors were taking advantage of the strike to sell unwholesome and contaminated water to the citizens.
