The 918 Spyder now joins a list of historic Porsche supercars that include the 904 Carrera GTS, the 959, the 911 GT1 and the Carrera GT, all of which are no longer made.
In a release celebrating the car’s production Porsche announced that, “the legacy of this technology pioneer will reach far beyond its production time. Future generations of sports cars will benefit directly from innovations of the 918 Spyder.”
Included in that list of innovations are manufacturing processes and hybrid cooling methods, but the most exciting element is Porsche’s announcement that future hybrid models will make use of the 918’s “map switch” allowing for up to five different settings ranging from maximum performance, to maximum fuel economy.
Although its going out of production, the 918 Spyder holds the production car record on the Nurburgring with a lap time of 6 minutes and 57 seconds.
