5 Nigerian movies based on true life stories

Not all Nollywood movies are works of fiction. Here are five you probably don't know are based on true life stories.

Not all Nollywood movies are works of fiction. There are quite a number of movies based on real events, people and stories.

There's "Dry," a film on Vesicovaginal fistula condition, inspired by a true life story of a lady Stephanie Linus met in Northern Nigeria.

Pulse Movies has put together five Nollywood movies based on true life stories, which you probably haven't seen.

Here we go;

1. "Dibia"

Directed by Muyiwa Aluko, "Muyiwa" follows the story of a king who refuses to comply with the requests of village's Dibia.

The consequence of his disobedience is a drought in the land. He is pressured into complying with the request of the Dibia; the hand of his daughter in marriage.

Along the way, he deceived the Dibia into restoring rain to the land and kills him. Before his death, the Dibia places a generational curse upon the king's daughters.

"Dibia" focuses on a woman from the King's lineage, who must choose between divorcing or husband or suffering the same fate as her aunt who lost every single one of the five husbands she ever married.

2. "Trials of Igho"

In the movie, a man goes to jail for killing a man who slept with his wife. On his return from jail, he discovers that he killed the wrong person.

He decides to kill the right person this time around and spend the rest of his life in jail.

"Trials of Igho" is a movie that doesn't offer the typical happy ever after ending. It's not until the credits roll that you realize why; it's based on a true-life story.

3. "Private Storm"

Very few films have presented as realistic or harrowing accounting of abuse in relationships as Vivian Ejike's "Private Storm."

In the movie, Gina and Alex seem like the ideal couple on the outside, but Alex's urge to always be in control of all aspect of Gina's life is threatening their relationship.

Alex abuses her emotionally and physically and then apologizes with money and gifts.

4. "93 Days"

The story of "93 Days" centres on the sacrifices made by men and women who risked their lives to make sure the Ebola virus was contained in Nigeria.

The movie was dedicated to the late Ameyo Adadevoh, who played a key role in ensuring that the virus didn't become an epidemic nationwide.

5. Apaye

A biopic, the Desmond Elliot film tells a story about how Yepayeye, who struggles to overcome the many challenges of a single mother of six, and eventually triumphed in ensuring the uprightness and education of her kids.
