In 2016, FOX aired what was supposed to be the last episode of the series, after 15 seasons. The network had cancelled the series because of cost and falling ratings.

According to The Associated Press, the show which was one of the most watched shows, had dropped from 30.8 million viewers per episode in 2006 to 6.5 million viewers.

The 15th season had kicked off with a video message from former president of America, Barack Obama, congratulating American Idol on an incredible 15 Season run, while sharing a special message about voting.

The 15th and supposed finale of "American Idols" saw 24-year-old waiter Trent Harmon emerge the winner.

ABC is yet to announce judges on the revived show.
