US President, Barack Obama has hired the first ever transgender member of staff to work in the White House, officials have said.

Raffi Freedman-Gurspan has been appointed to serve as an outreach and recruitment director in the White House Office of Presidential Personnel.

Raffi Freedman-Gurspan has been appointed to serve as an outreach and recruitment director in the White House Office of Presidential Personnel.
She was a former policy adviser at the National Centre for Transgender Equality before her appointment.
In confirming the appointment, a senior adviser to Obama, Valerie Jarrett, said:
“Raffi Freedman-Gurspan demonstrates the kind of leadership this administration champions. Her commitment to bettering the lives of transgender Americans, particularly transgender people of color and those in poverty, reflects the values of this administration.”
Her appointment is Obama's latest move in support of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender rights and has been praised by members of the LGBT community.
