Criminal probe dropped after deadly coach crash

The accident took place at dawn on March 20 as the bus was returning more than 60 exchange students from Valencia

Emergency personnel stand before the righted bus on the Spanish AP-7 motorway following a fatal accident that claimed the lives of 13 foreign students an injured 44 others on March 20, 2016

Prosecutors in Spain have dropped a criminal investigation into the driver of a coach that crashed in March killing 13 foreign students, a court source said Wednesday.

After hearing evidence from survivors and bus company staff, the magistrate investigating the accident said there was not enough evidence to prosecute the 62-year-old for homicide through negligence.

According to the magistrate's ruling, there was no mechanical fault and the bus was not speeding.

The driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol, took requisite breaks and was not distracted by his mobile phone.
