Pentagon says terrorist group leader has been killed

al-Shabab leader, Adnan Garaar who is believed to be behind a 2013 attack on a Nairobi shopping mall that killed 67 people, was killed in an air strike, Pentagon says.

Pentagon has issued a statement saying that the leader of al-Shabab, the terrorist group which carried out the attack on a Kenyan shopping group, has been killed.

Al Jazeera reports that the leader, Adnan Garaar who is believed to be behind a 2013 attack on a Nairobi shopping mall that killed 67 people, was killed in an air strike.

In the statement released by Pentagon, last Thursday the strike hit a vehicle carrying Garaar, a top official of the al-Shabaab armed group.

It said further:

"He posed a major threat to the region and the international community and was connected to the West Gate Mall attack in Nairobi, Kenya. His death has dealt another significant blow to the al-Shabaab terrorist organisation in Somalia"

Reports say at the time of the strike that the drone had hit a car carrying three al-Shabaab members and that the vehicle was completely burnt.

al-Shabaab is believed to target US and other Western interests to further al-Qaeda's goals.
