Supreme Court throws out governor’s suit against tribunal

Wike had gone to the apex court to challenge the jurisdiction of the tribunal which, on October 24, 2015, nullified his victory in the April 11 governorship elections.

Governor Nyesom Wike

The Supreme Court has dismissed a suit filed by Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike against the state election petition tribunal.

The governor had argued that the tribunal, which sat in Abuja due to security concerns, had no jurisdiction over events that occurred in Rivers.

The tribunal, in its ruling, found that Wike hadn’t been validly elected due to irregularities which marred the polls.

It therefore ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to hold a fresh election within 90 days.

Wike and his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have vowed to challenge the judgment which they say cannot stand.
