Tribunal says Wada lacks capacity to challenge Bello’s governorship

Former Kogi State Governor, Idris Wada.

The tribunal made the decision today, June 7, 2016, a day after dismissing a similar application filed by former All Progressives Congress (APC) deputy governorship candidate, James Faleke.

According to the tribunal, Wada has no right to challenge Bello because the latter’s nomination was a domestic affair of the APC.

Bello emerged governor following the death of original APC candidate, Abubakar Audu after the November 22, 2015 elections.

Audu had been in the lead before his death and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) subsequently authorized the APC to choose a replacement who would claim the late candidate’s votes.

Bello’s candidacy was challenged by both Faleke and Wada based on the argument that he had no claim to the governorship since he didn’t contest the November 22 elections.

The tribunal however said that Faleke, who was Audu’s running mate could not be named governor because he didn’t participate in the APC’s primaries.
